There is a great deal more to developing a fruitful winery than just the wine. Success in the wine business is not about building huge estates, it’s about building strong relationships. Great wine starts in the vineyard, and Reed specifically contract with the best, most suitable vineyards in California. Among those are the Truchard, Sangiacomo, Nova, Roach and Spring Mountain vineyards.
Spring Mountain Vineyards - Napa Valley
Spring Mountain is one of the most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon locations in the world, and X has cultivated a vital relationship with Spring Mountain Vineyard.
With a reputation for judicious pruning, small harvests, and stressful growing conditions, the vineyards of Spring Mountain provide the perfect vehicle to produce venerable, intense fruit. The high coastal mountain slopes of the vineyard are the supreme feature to extract balanced tannins and dark flavors.
Used to produce the highest-end offerings of both the X and Amicus labels, Spring Mountain continues to impress our winemakers, as well as complementing their winemaking styles.
Truchard & Sangiacomo Vineyards - Two of Carneros Best Vineyards
Truchard Vineyards is one of the most high profile X Winery partners. For more than 30 years, grapes from family-owned Truchard have been marked with distinction as some of the first and finest fruit to emerge from the Carneros region. Our winemaker's praises the Truchards for consenting to let their fruit hang out longer than any other, braving the threat of rain to allow those last hard elements of the skins soften up to perfection. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir produced from these grapes are intricately textured and uniformly rich.
The Sangiacomo family are known to be salt-of-the-earth, hard-working farmers who consistently deliver some of the most wild flavors in their grapes, often accentuated by concentrated, uncultivated tones.
Nova Vineyards - Lake County
Lake County is one of the lesser know appellations in Northern California, but its wines are not. This area has been growing wine since the late 18th century and was the largest grape growing area in California before prohibition. Today, there are over 8,800 acres of premium wines that include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel and many others. Lake County has many unique geological features. Clear Lake is the largest natural lake in California and acts as an air conditioner during warm summer days, cooling grapes and allowing them to ripen at optimum levels. The base of Mt. Konocti, a dormant volcano, is rich with alluvial soils needed for the development of premium grapes. The Lake County appellation is a special gem in Northern California's distinct growing environment.
Roach Vineyards - St. Helena
Nestled in the heart of the Napa Valley, just north of St. Helena, sits a premium block of Bordeaux vineyards. The Roach family, investors in X, have owned this property since 2000. Throughout the years, X has worked hand in hand with the vineyard management team overseeing this 7 acre property.
Made up of 4 blocks: (1) 6 year old clone 7 Cabernet, (2) 43 year old Cabernet Sauvignon (dry farmed) and head trained), (3) 'House Block' Petit Verdot (1 meter by 1 meter spacing), and (4) 'Old Block' Petit Verdot. Almost all of this premium fruit is used in X's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
